All of our design teams are busy making final preparations for PSWC 2016. With less than a week before conference, the KAP basement is full of activity from everyone from steel bridge working on final fabrication and assembly, concrete canoe preparing the stands, section, and display table, geotech building their box, surveying practicing, and environmental finishing their system. We’re excited to showcase our work in Long Beach next week!
The environmental team works on their filtering system. The concrete canoe team tests out their new, reusable folding wood canoe stands.Geotech captain Marissa measures the geowall box.Steel bridge team members discuss how to manufacture a part.Steel bridge members at work. The steel bridge box where pieces are transported. The steel bridge team takes a brief break to pose for a photo.Pieces of the Steel Bridge are laid out.Surveying team members practice in E-Quad.
We’re all working hard to get everything ready for PSWC 2015. Our Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Geotechnical, Dog House, and Concrete Bowling teams are all putting in long hours today in the KAP Basement, and everyone’s super excited for conference!
Painting the dog house, steel bridge, and transportation poster stands.
We’ve finished assembling the wood structure for the 2015 dog house. Next steps are to paint the exterior and execute our theme: “A Trip Around LA in Food Trucks”.
Our PSWC 2015 dog house is fully assembled and ready for painting.
Five USC representatives traveled to Panama City, Panama last week for the 2014 ASCE Global Engineering Conference. In addition to attending various technical sessions and networking with professionals, we visited several significant architectural and engineering sites, including the Panama Canal and the job site of the Panama Canal expansion project.

We’ve been busy putting the finishing touches on our concrete canoe and its auxiliary components over the past few weeks. Our cut-away section is a seven-foot-long space shuttle, complete with red steel stands (not pictured):
Our two stands include a massive asteroid (made out of concrete, of course), and a special robotic guest:
We’re building some other cool stuff, including a canoe, of course, but you’ll have to wait until PSWC to see everything else. For now check out the construction pics:

We just sanded a big block of foam into the shape of a space shuttle…
SC Traveler was finally removed from behind our building, to make room for DiSCovery I and DiSCovery II after PSWC 2014.
While SC Traveler was a great improvement for our 2013 canoe team, we’re hoping to reach new levels of success with DiSCovery II.

After pour day, we decided to re-pour this year’s canoe with a better reinforcement product, as the reinforcement led to the canoe being much thicker than we had designed. But we’re saving this first canoe for practice! Here it is, fresh out of the mold:
Our 2014 practice canoe, fresh out of the mold, with the construction team.
Our Steel Bridge team is working hard to finish building their top-secret design by March 1st. This will allow plenty of time to tweak and finish the bridge, as well as practicing assembly for the competition. We’re excited for PSWC 2014 and will be selecting our competition team in the next few weeks.
