Philomath Timber Lodge

As operations expand at the Patrick Lumber Manufacturing plant in Philomath, OR, Patrick Lumber Company completed a new hillside office/lodge building in 2023. The building showcases the company’s range of wood products with a heavy timber frame and extensive use of interior and exterior wood finishes. DC Builders constructed the DC Structures design under a design/build contract. I consulted with the owner on building massing and miscellaneous design details.

Alaska Yellow Cedar decking lines the wraparound porch.
Heavy timber trusses at the entries.
Redwood board and batten siding.
A two-story side mass includes enclosed offices on the upper level.
Interior flooring in solid-sawn wide planks.
Half of the porch is covered to facilitate indoor-outdoor usage.
The completed interior centers on an open space with a clerestory roof pop-up.
A side conference room features historic company artifacts and a newly-commissioned table.
New tables built from fire-salvaged Douglas Fir old growth with clear vertical grain in 2×24 boards over steel bases on casters for flexibility.
Wood chips reveal new pathways planned as part of the hillside planting restoration.
The second-floor landing overlooks the main space.
The offices are set against a backdrop of mature oaks that the building and approach road were oriented to preserve.
A catering kitchen opens to both the main hall and the exterior deck.
