score preview

ENGELBERG is a bright hymn tune written by Charles Villiers Stanford as a setting for For All the Saints, just two years before the better-known pairing of SINE NOMINE. Fortunately, the tune is associated with several more contemporary texts and remains frequently used.

This arrangement for cello choir includes all six of Stanford’s settings from the original publication in Hymns Ancient and Modern (1904). Most choral parts are adapted for cellos at the original pitches, with some use of doubling in octaves and a condensed organ accompaniment filling the remaining parts. Use multiple cellists per part for best results, prioritizing extra players to support the thumb position melody verses.
