Land of Rest is an American folk tune and hymn tune. The name comes from its text pairing in The Sacred Harp (1844), and several twentieth century hymn arrangements have brought wide use. The melody is distinctly American in sentiment, evoking expansive landscapes across flowing pentatonic notes.
This arrangement for cello trio demonstrates that the cello is uniquely suited to play this tune, with several lines that could be excerpted as solos. In trio, the melody is repeated with only subtle variations as the accompaniment parts provide rhythmic variety with rich textures. Contemporary harmonies stem from the linear part writing to seamlessly blend with the simple melody. The result is a clearly twenty-first century rendition with surprising complexity stemming from just three parts.
