This arrangement of Amazing Grace for cello trio takes a freer, more improvisatory form than my previous arrangements for Cello Ensemble and Solo Cello. It features swung eighths and a contrapuntal jazz style, inspired by the early vocal traditions from which the tune developed.
The three cello parts collaborate through a blend of rhythmic and harmonic gestures that alternately suggest or directly state the melody. Using the broad range of the cello, both individual parts and the collective ensemble move between tight low growls and clear high passages. The concluding verse gathers for a simple open harmony with subtle rhythmic staggers. For best results, play with only three cellists, and take liberties with the tempo and rhythmic feel throughout.
