Collection: Southern Harmony (1835)
William Walker’s Southern Harmony is an early collection of sacred hymns first published in 1835. This source is credited with popularizing many hymns that are still in use today. Pieces in this collection appear in the later 1854 edition of Southern Harmony; note that Walker credits previous composers and hymnals for many of these tunes and others are traditional American folk tunes. Some arrangements incorporate specific source material found in the shape-note harmonies from Southern Harmony.
