DOWN AMPNEY, named for composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birthplace, is closely associated with its original text pairing Come Down, O Love Divine. This arrangement is driven by an arpeggiated ostinato in the upper parts. Cello IV introduces the melody in a low bass suggestive of ground bass. Cello III anchors the next verse as the upper ostinato evolves and the bass line continues as an accompaniment. The third verse evolves into a key change as the ostinato spreads to quarter notes so that Cello II can play the melody. Finally, the fourth verse presents (nearly) the original four-part harmonization, from The English Hymnal (1906).
