Down in [to] the River to Pray is a traditional American spiritual song of unknown origin. This arrangement for cello quartet applies a jazz style in contrast with the straight rhythms and traditional harmonies found in most contemporary settings. Six repetitions trade the melody across parts with varied syncopated accompaniments. Thick harmonies occasionally emerge from the linear part-focused writing. The free flowing style works best with a flexible quartet of four cellists.
