The ubiquitous German hymn tune ELLACOMBE can be found with a wide range of text pairings in most hymnals. This arrangement for cello choir of any size applies an improvisatory contrapuntal style at march tempo. The first verse layers responsive scales outlining the melody. Next, syncopated notes form broken arpeggios while the melody jumps between octaves. The third verse underlays sweeping bowed arpeggios followed by a softer eighth note texture. Finally, the four-part harmonization is presented followed by a repetition of the first verse.
