This arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition for unaccompanied solo cello is derived from Modest Mussgorsky’s original score for solo piano, directly adapted from my arrangement for Cello Ensemble. Nearly the entire piece is included (omitting one interior promenade and the following two pictures). The work totals around 22 minutes and can be performed as a shorter selection of movements.
Several passages are abbreviated from the original and ensemble versions to work better on solo cello. While the solo version is generally more difficult than the equivalent ensemble parts, some sections are re-voiced into easier octaves for balance.
The score is optimized to be printed double-sided on four 11×17 sheets. There are a couple of places that may be worth printing out a 3rd-up page for performance from the score with mid-movement page turns. The sample recording is of the first promenade only.
