Resignation is a traditional hymn tune is best know for its pairing with My Shephard Will Supply My Need. This arrangement for cello ensemble works best with 1-3 cellists per part. Every part gets to play the recognizable melody as the four verses traverse a wide range of textures.

Verse one opens with a harmonic drone underlaid by two solo statements of the melody’s “A” line. The “B” line is paired with an expansive bass line before the three accompaniment parts unify into harmonic chords above the melody.

The second verse features two octaves of melody in canon, each paired with a syncopated countermelody to creature an energetic contrapuntal texture. Halfway through, the four parts come together into a series of triplet arpeggios, finishing with a softer blend of arpeggios accompanied by the melody and a more articulated response.

In the third verse, the ensemble synchronizes into a traditional expression in four-part harmony, first in a more chromatic 20th-century harmony, then in a more diatonic 19th-century harmony. The first verse is restated before the piece closes with a soft harmonic coda.
