RESTORATION is a traditional American melody first published in William Walker’s Southern Harmony (1835). That simple version forms the basis for this arrangement, which develops into a syncopated interpretation as harmony parts are added. The tune was later adapted for the text Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy, and renamed to ARISE in reference to its refrain. This arrangement is designed for quartets with one cellist per part but can also be played by larger ensembles (with some additional difficulty due to the complexity of rhythms).

Six double verses (in the ARISE verse/refrain structure) progress through alternating traditional/straight and original/syncopated variations. First, each part presents the melody in isolation, layering into a preview of later harmonies and syncopations in the refrain. Second, pairs of cellists each present half a syncopated verse in duet. Next, two- and adjusted-four-part canons fill out a straight verse. The fourth verse presents the syncopated melody in octaves over running eight notes and pizzicato accents. The fifth verse breaks each beat of the straight melody across all four parts before splitting to duets alternating each beat. Finally, the sixth verse builds into an original four-part harmony in a syncopated interpretation, which is repeated twice.
