The hymn tune SINE NOMINE (translated as “without name”) is known as the most common setting for For All The Saints. This arrangement for cello ensemble or quartet begins and ends with Vaughan Williams’ organ accompaniment to the unison melody, complete with the walking bass line in the cello 4 part. The third verse similarly matches Vaughan Williams’ four-part choral setting that is often used for interior verses.
The odd verses are all held to the original octave and key, presenting a bright, festive march suggestive of higher-pitched ensembles in exchange for a degree of difficulty. Verses two and four each feature softer, lower accompaniments to the melody set in the two lower octaves available on the cello. Each original accompaniment is based on densely-layered arpeggios for contrast with the outer harmonized verses.
