Unlike most hymn tune arrangements, this version of LAUDES DOMINI (known best as a setting for When Morning Gilds the Skies) states the full melody only once. The complete melodic statement is bookended by a chorale derived from the first few chords of the hymn. The broad major chords in this section contrast with the tighter chromatic sequences in the rest of the hymn. The first third of the arrangement layers notes into an abstract verse mixing snippets of the melody with chromatic harmonies, enhancing the arrival into the chorale.

The four cello parts can be played by a wide range of cello ensembles from quartets to choirs. Where possible, everyone should read from the third-page score (it is appropriate to make a coordinated page turn after the first page). Parts are also available when needed.
