Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is an African American spiritual often sung as a call and response, and now used in a wide range of cultural settings. This arrangement for cello quartet takes an improvisatory jazz form at a measured tempo. Play freely with personalized style applied by the four cellists.
The first verse begins in duet and gradually layers more parts. The second verse features the low octave melody with softer accompaniments growing to thick triplets. In the third verse, cello 4 plays a walking bass line in pizzicato before overtaking the melody in solo with responses in three part harmony. The fourth verse features the upper-octave melody with thicker and more frequent harmonic responses. A final refrain slows to luscious chords and a final layering to the end.
