Written specifically for the Boulder Cello Project, this arrangement is designed to be accessible to musicians of widely varying abilities. In the various movements, the upper parts are extremely difficult, in some cases pushing the physical boundaries of the cello’s range in the extreme treble clef, while the lower parts are accessible to relative beginners.
While all four movements are included in their entirety, it will frequently be more appropriate for ensembles to select only a single movement to polish and perform. The first (“Morning Mood”) and last (“In the Hall of the Mountain King”) movements are particularly recognizable, and include most of the parts found in the original, which are frequently stripped out of cello ensemble arrangements. The middle movements (“The Death of Åse” and “Anitra’s Dance”) are relatively easier in this arrangement and offer an opportunity for ensembles to demonstrate expressive playing and a range of emotions. The entire suite is a phenomenal work, and complete performances are possible for those willing to put in some effort.
