The short hymn tune AZMON is known for its pairing with several texts. The arrangement takes the form of a theme and variations. It is accessible to intermediate and higher-level cello quartets and ensembles with at least 4 cellists.
The theme is presented in four-part harmony. The ten variations are grouped into sections. First, two statements build on eighth note abstractions. Then sixteenth note ornamentation emerges as an abstraction followed by a three-part accompaniment to the melody. Three progressive verses develop a simplified version of the melody before building into a triplet-accompanied variation of the melody. The final two variations reprise the sixteenth note patterns as both three-part accompaniment and as ornamentation within a slightly altered four-part harmonization.
