This hymn tune is closely associated with Abide With Me, the text for which it was written. This arrangement threads arpeggios reminiscent of bell tones through five verses.
The first verse features the melody in its lowest octave, predominantly on the C string, while the upper three parts play broken eighth-note arpeggios. The second verse jumps into a middle-octave melody paired with a chromatic lower countermelody, while the arpeggios jump into the upper register. The middle verse anchors the arrangement with a simple statement of Monk’s four-part harmony, with a few alterations, in a slower tempo for emphasis. Verse four repeats the middle octave melody in pseudo-canon, with two parts in eighth-note arpeggios. The final verse returns to the high-octave melody, alongside a single harmony line and broken quarter-note arpeggios in the lower two parts.
