HEMLSLEY is an eighteenth-century hymn tune typically paired with the text Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending. This arrangement for cello ensemble takes a symmetrical form. The first and repeated closing verse pairs the exuberant melody with layered contrapuntal lines. The central third verse presents Ralph Vaughan Williams’ harmonization from The English Hymnal (1906). The remaining inner verses feature faster arpeggiated lines contrasted with softer dynamics. This arrangement is suitable for ensembles with one to three cellists per part.
