HYFRYDOL is a Welsh hymn associated with a wide array of texts. This arrangement for cello quartet presents four verses in a swift tempo and comforting C Major. The first verse takes a lightly contrapuntal approach with alternating arpeggiated accompaniments. Next, a softer melody in the middle octave is accompanied by an arpeggiated ostinato on three notes, gradually joined by additional voices. The third verse pairs alternating arpeggio sequences in eighth notes before setting up the conclusion. Finally, the last verse features Ralph Vaughan Williams’ four-part harmony from the English Hymnal (1906). Perform in quartet with one cellist per part for best results.
