The hymn tune NETTLETON is well know for its use in Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing and other hymns. This arrangement for cello ensemble features several vibrant settings at a quick tempo.
The first verse is an articulated, modernized interpretation of a harmonization from an early twentieth century hymnal, notable for its upper-register voicing of the third line. The second verse interprets the melodic material into a series of broken arpeggios. Triplets in the third verse give way to a monolithic progression of quarter notes in the fourth verse. The fifth verse features progressively-dense sixteenth notes leading into a restatement of the harmonization in the first verse to close the piece.
The key, in B-flat, and upper register parts in the cello 1 part, are the most difficult parts of this arrangements. The inner parts are somewhat easier, and all parts get portions of the melody. This arrangement can be played by cello quartets and works best with around two cellists per part.
