The hymn tune NICAEA is closely associated with the Trinity text Holy, Holy, Holy. This arrangement opens and closes with verses in Dykes’ four-part harmonization. The key is lowered significantly from hymnal settings that range from D to E major. With cellos, this G major setting is optimized to bring out the melody in a prominent register, supported by a thicker blend in the harmony parts. The second verse drops the melody an octave along with a simplified bass line and soft overlaid arpeggios. In the third verse, three parts layer triplet-based arpeggios in reference to the trinity text and contrasting complexity with the simple final verse.
