This arrangement of Silent Night for cello trio expands on my earlier arrangement for cello duet. Each of the three verses features a different part on the melody with unique accompaniments. The overall setting is broad and contemplative. Rich harmonic structures emerge from creative use of the three voices, while the timber varies with subtle shifts in rhythm and restrained use of different registers in each verse.
The first two movements may be played as a duet by omitting the cello II part. None of the parts should be doubled – this arrangement works best with only two or three cellists. All three parts are read from the score to encourage cross-reading and familiarity with the interactions between all three parts.
